Adult Baseball
Well, now you have your new baseball glove. It is stiff and inflexible. So now you have to break it in.
You should know several different methods for breaking in a baseball glove exist. You will find supporters and critics for each method. If you asked different baseball players how they break in their baseball glove, you can count on a different answer from each ballplayer.
The real secret is, it all depends upon you and how you like your glove to be. The best suggestion is to check with the manufacturer for their suggestions. Not all baseball gloves are made equal. Grade and quality count. A glove for a first baseman is going to have different requirements and methods to be used to break it in, when compared to a third baseman's glove.
You will have two basic objectives. First, soften the leather. Second, create a pocket in the glove. How do you soften the leather? You have several options, Vaseline, Saddle Soap, Manufacturer's Solutions - Most of the major glove makers offer their own oils, Mink Oil or Neat's-foot Oil, Tanners Glove Oil, and the "Hot Glove" Treatment. This treatment consists of putting special foam on your glove. Bake the glove in your oven for 4 minutes at approximately 275 degrees.
This is a controversial method. Some baseball players swear by it, others players hate it, and claim it lessens the life of the glove and eventually causes it to become stiff in colder weather. However, and this is important. More treatments do not make for a better glove.
You must use the above methods in small amounts and be sure to wipe it all around your glove. Allow the oil or soap to be absorbed and then see how the glove fees. You can always apply another application.
To create the pocket for the baseball gloves, simply take 2 to 3 baseballs, insert them into the pocket, and bind the glove with either rubber bands or a non-stick tape and let the glove sit for 5 days.
