All Grey Small
Abstract contemporary artist, Piet Mondrian, produced a famous series of paintings depicting trees which offer an interesting topic for discussion of his work. Mondrian's tree series included red & grey tree paintings, and they are a real contrast to his other best-known works such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie", and "Red, Yellow and Blue".
Mondrian's tree series serves as a dividing point between his two periods of work. Mondrian's "Red Tree", "Blue Tree" and "Grey Tree" illustrate the European landscape in a unique manner. Mondrian appeared to be following the style of Van Gogh in his trees series, and this is unfortunate for such a good artist in his own right. Van Gogh's expressive semi-abstract style is not something Mondrian could achieve, but the trees series are still impressive in their own right, and still contain enough of Mondrian's own style. The trees marked a point where Mondrian was to look for a new way of expressing his art and from then on became much more abstract.
Mondrian's slight shortcomings in his trees series was overcome with his movement into Abstract painting which offered a more linear approach to his works, and took advantage of his excellent drawing skills. He went onto create his Boogie Woogie painting series, and these have become respected as some of the best compositions of the 20th century, installing Mondrian into the halls of art fame.
Mondrian's later abstract style helped him to profit the most from his art and achieve the greatest success possible from his artistic talents.
