The Characteristics of a Baseball Glove for Training Purposes
In the old days when baseball was first coming into existence players didn't even wear gloves. Which is why when Charles Waitt, a first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals he used flesh colored gloves in hopes that the fans wouldn't ridicule him. Times come and go and as the evolution of baseball took shape, so did the technology of using baseball gloves.
By the 1890s, everyone was accustomed to using a glove whether during their baseball training or at game time. By this time, gloves were simply leather with the fingertips cut out. The equivalent today would be if you went to a gym to lift weights and purchased a pair of similar gloves. They were made this way so that there would be more padding in the palm, but you would still be able to grip and throw without any recourse. Many of the players developed different baseball drills to get used to the new little accessories.
By the 1920s, ideas were surfacing on how to make a pocket to make it easier to catch. This was thanks to the suggestions by Bill Doak also a player for the St. Louis Cardinals and pitcher for the team. Next thing you know its another mandatory thing around the baseball world as everyone consumes the idea. Then new age of sports was upon us changing it forever with a simple little glove.
With each technological upgrade to the baseball glove means more things for coaches to teach during baseball training. Whether fielding a bunt, or diving for a line drive in deep left center field, if not for the way the glove was made would these feats look as easy as they do. Especially with the variety gloves out there. Think of the catcher's mitt and what it would be like to have to catch using both hands. 95% of catchers would wind up with broken fingers and hands from foul balls or fast pitches. A first baseman's glove designed to snatch line drives and fast ground balls, and especially throws that may wind up in the dirt that are headed for first.
Second basemen and shortstops being provided with smaller gloves so that getting the ball out quickly to make double plays will come more frequently. Continuing down the line all the way to the bullpen. There is a glove for everyone, even the batters but that\'s a different article. Depending on which position you play will help ultimately decide on which baseball glove you end up purchasing.
When baseball training hits (usually around February) and its time to go looking for a glove first thing you\'ll want is something that is comfortable. Check for extra pocket padding or if there is a sleeve to place extra in there. Will you be needing a hole for your index finger to roam freely? If your an outfielder can you find the longest legal glove out there? Because you never know when you may need just one more inch when your playing in a game. Guess it would help to choose the appropriate handed glove first, and then work all the other variables into the equation. Good luck searching for your ultimate baseball glove.
