Black Softball
palomino mare has black spots on body, anyone know why?
She is 2 years old and out of a black and white tobiano mare and a perlino stallion. She is a golden color and these black spots keep showing up on her body. She has a very large one the size of a softball on her right butt cheek and the other ones on along her butt and neck. This is perplexing me. Also I am going to breed her to a buckskin stud next year. Do you think I could get a buckskin paint out of her?
The dark spots are normal on certain shades of palomino, especially those that have some silver and black in their tales. A three year old is really too young to breed in my opinion. Horse usually grow and fill out well into the fifth year, so I would wait at least until her five year old year to breed her. Otherwise you run the risk of stunting her growth, stressing her baby joints and if your nutrition plan isn't 100% on target, you could end up with a very skinny, crooked, broken down mare.
Plus, make sure that this mare is really great before you breed her, and make sure that the stallion you pick is great too. If you breed just for color, you are contributing to a terrible problem. Beautiful coats on nasty tempered, crooked legged, inferior horses. Plus the horse market isn't that strong (at least around me) so more horses isn't a great thing.
