Phenom Lightning
Evgeni Malkin is an NHL (National Hockey League) hockey player, currently playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. But he was not always in the NHL, and it certainly was not easy for him to become a Penguin. Evgeni Malkin was born in Magnitogorsk, Russia in 1986. Growing up, he played hockey all the time. He dreamed of one day playing for a world-class team. In 2003, he got his wish. He was drafted into the Russian Superleague by Metallurg Magnitogorsk at age 17. He also was picked to play in the U-18 World Championships. After playing for Magnitgorsk and representing Russia in the World Championships, Malkin wanted to move on to the NHL.
In the 2004 entry draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins drafted him, 2nd overall. After Malkin was drafted, there were some disputes from his old team, Metallurg Magnitgorsk. They said that because of contract agreements, Malkin had to stay in Russia and play for them. Malkin was not allowed to leave the country and his passport was taken away from him. Malkin continued playing for them until he and his agent could find some kind of loophole.
In 2007, it appeared that Malkin would have to stay in Russia another year. Malkin claimed that his one year contract was signed by him only because of "intense psychological pressure" put on him by his team. After some legal maneuvering, Malkin's agent finally found what they had been looking for. According to Russian labor laws, if Malkin put in a two week notice that he was leaving, he would be released of his duties to Magnitgorsk. So Malkin put in his two week notice and signed his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fearing attacks on him, Malkin had to flee the country. He and his agent took his belongings, passport, and a Canadian Visa and fled to the United States.
After fleeing with his agent, he arrived in Pittsburgh. The Penguins finally got to welcome the player that they had been waiting for. Malkin turned out to be an amazing player, and Pittsburgh loved him. Within a few months of being here, Malkin felt at home and welcome. Jerseys with his name on the back could be seen throughtout the whole city of Pittsburgh. Combined with Sidney Crosby, the young phenom, the Penguins would be a team to be feared.
